The OUA won’t have an undefeated team in Women’s basketball this season.

Queens Women’s Basketball travelled to Toronto to take on the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold and the University of Toronto (U of T) Varsity Blues on Jan. 30 and Jan. 31, respectively. The Gaels going into the weekend were in for a task against a strong Bold team that has run away with the OUA’s central division.

A clash between the two best teams in the OUA started in the Gaels favour, leading by as much as eight points early in the first quarter. More of the same in the second quarter as the Gaels controlled the play, taking an eight-point lead into half.

In the second half, Queen’s looked like they were poised to run away with it, until TMU’s offence came alive lead by the OUA’s third-highest points per game player, Myriam Kone. Kone led the charge late in the third quarter with eight points in a two-minute span to diminish the lead to one going into the fourth.

The Gaels fourth quarter offence went cold, shooting just three of 10 from the field goal, and the Bold took advantage, taking a four-point led mid-way through the quarter.  The Gaels tried to come back, but the Bold hung on, handing Queens their first loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion.

Despite the loss, the Gaels had to bounce back with a quick turnaround game against the Varsity Blues on Jan. 31. Katrina Renon, ArtSci ’27, came out flying, scoring the first seven points of the game and leading the charge for the Gaels early. After a relatively close first quarter, Queen’s ran away with it and never looked back, securing the victory and maintaining the best record in the OUA.

Kiyara Letlow, MSc ’27, continues her impressive streak, making it eight straight games with a double-double. Despite the loss, the Gaels continue to hold down the second spot in the USports rankings, only trailing USaskatchewan.

The Gaels look to continue their historic season with three remaining games on the docket, all of them being at home. Their next match takes place on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. against the Nipissing University Lakers.
