Women’s rugby knocked out of CIS berth

With loss to Guelph, the Gaels’ only shot at hardware is this weekend’s bronze medal game against McMaster

After Saturday’s 56-3 loss to the third-ranked Guelph Gryphons, the 10th-ranked women’s rugby team has been knocked out of a chance to compete for a provincial gold medal and a national gold medal.

Head coach Beth Barz said the loss didn’t affect the team much.

“They’ve actually reacted relatively well,” she said. “Beating Guelph would be a fairly large challenge, we already talked about re-setting and re-focusing for next weekend and we’re already in the process of planning for that.”

The Gaels will meet the McMaster Marauders in the bronze medal match this Saturday in Hamilton. The Marauders lost to the Western Mustangs in their semifinal matchup after finishing first place in the Russel Division, one spot ahead of the Gaels.

McMaster beat the Gaels by a convincing 39-6 scoreline on Sept. 26, but Barz said her team’s ready for the rematch.

“We have a pretty good idea of what they’ll bring to the table,” she said. “We’ll have a couple of plans up our sleeve for what we’ll bring to them and what we’re expecting from them as well.”

Barz said although the team set a goal of reaching the nationals, the team’s youth is a positive going into next season.

“[Nationals] is what we wanted to achieve this year, but apparently this wasn’t quite the year,” she said. “We have a young team and we’re hoping to attract quite a few decent recruits so there’s some sense of looking forward, but we can’t afford to look forward this week. We’ll have to do that next weekend.”
