Women’s soccer added to their undefeated streak over the weekend, which now stretches to six games.
After a scoreless draw to the UOIT Ridgebacks Friday night, the Gaels defeated Trent 3-1 Sunday afternoon in Peterborough.
On Friday night, the Gaels played against the stingiest defense in the league in the second-placed Ridgebacks, who have yet to give up a goal in October. Despite this, Queen’s forward Tara Bartram said it’s unfortunate the Gaels didn’t to take all three potential points.
“Obviously, we’re a little upset with the results [against UOIT],” she said in an email interview with The Journal. “We dominated a lot of the game Friday, [we] just struggled to find the back of the net.”
The Gaels weren’t held off the scoresheet on Sunday, as fifth-year midfielder Jessie de Boer opened the scoring after just 11 minutes into the game against the Trent Excalibur. After a Trent equalizer, Micah Vermeer added a goal of her own before Tianna Lombardo added some insurance with Queen’s third goal of the day.
“We couldn’t be happier with [the] results,” Bertram said. “We did everything we needed to get three points and gain some confidence going forward.”
Queen’s had already defeated the winless Trent 4-1 in September, which made it an easier match for Queen’s. Nonetheless, Bartram said the team went in fully focused on their play and not on their opponents.
“It can be dangerous to take a team lightly based on their standings, especially when playing away,” she said. “We go into every game with same mindset to play our own game.”
Bartram did say the playoffs are tough to ignore.
“When are we not thinking about the playoffs?” she said. “Playoffs are always in the back of your mind.”
With only two matches left until the playoffs, the Gaels couldn’t have picked a better time for a six-game undefeated run. Still, Bartram said the team is trying to maintain focus on the games ahead.
“Today’s results were great,” she said. “But it’s only one goal we’ve set to hit by the start of the playoffs … it’s crunch time and next weekend we face two new teams with a potential six points up for grabs.”
She added that the team is happy with their four point haul for the weekend.
With a top-two finish on the line for the Gaels, their final two matches this weekend have an added significance. That, and the Homecoming atmosphere should lead to two exciting matches.
“You can tell we’re reaching the end of the season as each game gets more intense,” she said.
