The women’s soccer team continued their hot streak this weekend as they defeated the Trent Excalibur 4-0 in Peterborough on Saturday before returning home on Sunday to shutout the Ryerson Rams 1-0.
Coming off a mid-week upset of the OUA-leading University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, the Tricolour stretched their winning streak to seven games. They now sit second in the OUA East at an 8-1-1 record.
Goalkeepers Elena Corry and Chantel Marson posted clean sheets this weekend for the team. After their match with Ryerson, the Gaels have gone 460 minutes without allowing a goal, their last being surrendered in the 34th minute against the Royal Military College Paladins on Sept. 26.
Against Trent, captain Kelli Chamberlain put away two goals, midfielder Chantal McFetridge added another and the Excalibur were credited with an own goal. On Sunday, midfielder Cathleen Brennan was the only player to find her name on the scoresheet.
Head coach Dave McDowell said he was impressed with the perseverance the team showed after playing such an important game in Ottawa earlier in the week.
“It’s hard to come off the big mid-week game at Ottawa and then play a team you’ve beaten handily before,” he said.
McDowell said Queen’s couldn’t pull away from the Rams on Sunday due to Ryerson’s strong play.
“I thought Ryerson played really well today and limited what we could do,” he said. “When you have 17 shots and you’re not very clinical in your finishing or your crosses aren’t good enough, you keep them around and get the finish we got.”
This weekend’s games concluded a stretch of five games in eight days for the Gaels. McDowell said he was pleased to see the team work hard through the week.
“I think we want to make sure that we’re still improving and learning from each game and keeping the standard of play up,” he said. “It’s been such a long stretch and hard from an energy standpoint to keep things going.”
Chamberlain said the team continues to improve as the season progresses.
“I think each game we’re progressing,” she said. “We’re bringing stuff we take into practice into games, which is helping us a lot.
With such a compact schedule, Chamberlain was very happy about her teammates’ contributions off the bench.
“Having a lot of games in a few amount of days could really hurt a team but we have so many good subs that can come in and raise the level that it really helps us,” Chamberlain said. “Playing five games in eight days can really kill your legs.”
Chamberlain said it’s nice having two capable goalkeepers.
“Both our goalies are doing awesome this year,” she said. “They both come in and give what we need them to give. They do a really good job communicating.” Queen’s next games are in northern Ontario where they will visit the Nipissing Lady Lakers and the Laurentian Lady Vees this weekend.
“We’ve played both of them and beaten them both but they could’ve improved as the season has gone on,” Chamberlain said. “We’re going to go out like against any other team and play our best and hopefully good results come.”
