Those coming to Queen’s this fall will be greeted with the ever-familiar sight of construction barriers, as the JDUC’s completion has been postponed once again.
On Aug. 8, the University announced that the full completion of the JDUC revitalization project will be delayed until Nov. 29. While the 90-room residence will open on Aug. 23 as planned, the remainder of the building will not be ready for occupancy until the new date.

The University had initially planned a phased occupancy starting in mid-September, as announced on July 23. However, this approach has now been abandoned in favour of a single, final completion date.
Shifting the final completion date comes as the University grapples with ongoing construction setbacks and resource constraints. According to the Gazette, the delay results from unexpected issues, including problems with sewer infrastructure and the building’s elevator shaft, which have hindered construction progress.
“The project team placed a priority focus on the renovated residence to ensure it opened to house students as planned. Achieving this required the resequencing of other work and redirecting project resources away from the main building, which also faced challenges,” the Gazette reported.
Until occupancy is finalized, clubs and organizations, including AMS offices and services, which were scheduled to move into the revitalized JDUC on Aug. 1, will remain in their temporary locations.
