A student band in the eyes of their student newspaper

It’s a typical university party, with alcohol, loud music and friends. One privileged white male and one unconscious girl.

Kanye West isn’t totally unlike cilantro. Some people go crazy for cilantro, they love it in their burritos, in their curry, their smoothies salads and pretty much anything else. Some people just really, really like cilantro.

Yesterday I found myself hopping the fence into a stranger’s backyard, running through a church parking lot and straight into traffic. As I narrowly dodged an oncoming city bus, I caught myself whispering, “gotta catch ‘em all.”

The hate towards immigrants that has risen exponentially after the Brexit vote is sending chills down my spine an ocean away.

Tattooing your friends is a good time, but your friends tattooing you … not so much.Nevertheless, the age-old practice of needle and ink has gained popularity in the past year. With “do it yourself” tattoo tutorials readily available on Youtube or Tumblr, the form of body art is spreading. The Journal spoke with two tattoo artists to get some professional insight on the trend. Jason Goettler is the owner and an artist at Ink Well Tattoos and Piercings in Kingston, and Stephanie O’Handley is a professional handpoke tattoo artist based in Samara, Costa Rica.

It’s been an eventful month, but with our attention turned to our Southern partner’s political circus it was difficult to look away. Here’s a briefing of some important events that have occurred in the past month:

This July, a series of productions took place along downtown Princess Street, using abandoned storefronts as their stages.

The other week, I found myself gawking at glass.

The Agnes Etherington Art Centre has a new piece in its collection that combines art, history and politics into a story of Kingston’s beginnings.

On August 20, all of Kingston will have a front row seat to music history, as the beloved Kingston-bred band, The Tragically Hip say farewell to their fans with a final concert at the K-Rock Centre that will be live streamed in Market Square.

Kicking-off their summer tour this past week, Kingston’s Lost Cousins were back in their home town to play a free show for Skeleton Park Arts Festival.

With the exception of a brief middle school field trip to a Toronto mosque, my overall exposure to Islamic art had been very limited until I visited the Aga Khan Museum.

What do you get when you cross The Hunger Games with a wicked sense of humour? An outrageous novel with immoral characters and a whiplash-inducing plotline.
Queen’s student Jake Caldera’s The Elephant on Fire is just that. The novel, which was released in April, follows Hollywood actress Ember Gold on her journey across a developing country where she accidentally starts a revolution.

The off-the-shoulder top is making a comeback.

“Language, which is useful in the province of the intellect is a relatively clumsy vehicle in the expression of emotion and of narrative movement,” Carol Shields wrote in her work Narrative Hunger and the Possibilities of Fiction.

In their mid-twenties, the Abrams brothers have seen the inside of bars and music venues across North America, been the youngest Canadian musicians to play the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and been signed to Warner Music. This, all while completing degrees at Queen’s.
