It was a busy month for many sports teams at Queen’s.
As the calendar flips to October, The Journal is recapping how a handful of fall varsity club team performed in the month of September. Unlike varsity sports, varsity clubs are not fully funded by the University. They receive partial funding from Queen’s, and the rest is covered by team fees paid by the athletes themselves.
Baseball
The Men’s Baseball team has punched their ticket to the OUA playoffs after beating York University this past weekend on Sept. 26.
The win leaves them with an 8-6 record at the end of the regular season. The team split a doubleheader against Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) to begin their season on Sept. 5. They then split against the University of Ottawa on Sept. 12 before sweeping Carleton University a day later.

The following weekend, they split against the University of Toronto (U of T) on Sept. 19 before sweeping Laurentian University the day after. Finally, they split against York before losing both games to Guelph University this past weekend.
Memorable moments include a walk-off win against the Carleton Ravens on Sept. 13, and Brett James, ArtSci ’28, pitching two complete games in wins for the Gaels.
The OUA playoffs will take place in St. Catherines and Niagara Falls from Oct. 9-11 with six teams participating. The team will look to bring home its first OUA championship since 2022.
Fastpitch
The Women’s Fastpitch team has finished roughly half their season, sitting with a record of 7-5. They began their season with losses to the University of Windsor and Western University on Sept 12. They rebounded a day later by beating both Guelph and McMaster University on Sept. 13.
They split two home doubleheaders, one against U of T on Sept. 19 and one against the University of Waterloo on Sept. 20. They then faced the same teams the next weekend on the road, sweeping Waterloo on Sept. 26 before splitting with U of T a day later on Sept. 27.
The Gaels continue their busy schedule this upcoming weekend. They’ll take on Ottawa in a doubleheader at home on Oct. 2 before facing TMU at home on Sept. 3 in another doubleheader. They’ll finish with one more doubleheader on Oct. 4 on the road against York. All home games are played at Garrigan Park.
The Ontario University Softball (OUS) playoffs are in Ottawa from Oct. 18-19.
Field Hockey
The Women’s Field Hockey team currently has a record of 2-4. They split the opening weekend, losing to Waterloo on Sept. 11 before bouncing back and defeating Western a day later. They also split the following weekend, losing to Guelph on Sept. 19 before coming out victorious against McMaster on Sept. 20.
This past weekend saw the Gaels lose two consecutive games by a score of 1-0, one to U of T on Sept. 25 and the other to Waterloo on Sept. 27. They’ll look to rebound this weekend when they take on Western on Oct. 2 and York on Oct. 4, with both games taking place at Tindall Field.
Golf
Queen’s Golf is coming off two tournaments this past weekend.
On Sept. 26-27, the teams were at the Waterloo/Laurier Invitational, where the men’s team finished sixth and the women’s team finished third. David Ursu, Sci ’29, also finished first on the men’s individual side.
On Sept. 28, Queen’s Golf was at the Guelph Invitational, with the men finishing second and the women finishing third. Ursu also finished in a four-way tie for first in this event, sharing the podium with fellow teammate Kendrick Webster, Sci ’27.
Queen’s Golf had a very successful showing when they hosted their annual Bert Kea Memorial Tournament on Sept. 20. Both the men’s and women’s top teams secured victories in the team categories, and the Gaels had five players capture top ten individual performances.

The teams kicked off their season at the Guelph Kick Off on Sept. 11, with the women’s team finishing second and the men’s team finishing sixth.
Queen’s Golf’s last tournament of the season is the Windsor Invitational this upcoming weekend from Oct. 3-4. They’ll then head to the OUA championships in Ottawa, taking place from Oct 17-19.
Lacrosse
The Queen’s Women’s Lacrosse team currently has a 5-2 record. They began their season with three straight victories before losing to Western on Sept. 19. They bounced back with a win against Laurier a day later. This past weekend saw them play a doubleheader at home on Sept. 26, losing to Trent before dominating Ontario Tech University by a score of 22-2.
The team has two more games on the schedule. They’ll play Waterloo and then U of T to conclude their season on Oct. 4. The women’s OUA playoffs are from Oct. 16-18.
The Men’s Lacrosse team has a 2-2 record. They lost to McGill to open their season on Sept. 19 before beating the Bishop’s Gaiters on Sept. 20. They lost a shootout against Ottawa on Sept. 26 by a score of 15-14. Their Oct. 1 game against Trent saw Queen’s come out victorious with a 12-11 win in double overtime.
The men’s next game is at Carleton on Oct. 9. After that, the team will conclude its season with five straight home games.

Sailing
Queen’s Sailing has been busy, sending athletes to multiple regattas in Canada and the United States this past weekend. Sailing at Queen’s has expanded to compete in a much wider scope of regattas and tournaments in America, allowing their athletes to compete in more competitions and gain more opportunities.

Queen’s also came first at the Battle of Lake Erie at Pennsylvania State University from Sept. 19 to Sept. 20.
The club sent Andrew Kenny, ArtSci ’28, and Anna Powick, Sci ’29, to represent Canada at the 2026 International University Sports Federation (FISU) World Sailing Championships in Croatia. The event began Sept. 25 and will last until Oct. 3.
Tennis
Queen’s Tennis is back for its third year as a varsity club, this time under the leadership of Head Coach Tony Roth and Assistant Coach Kanaksh Dave.

The women’s team opened their season against Western on Sept. 13 with a 6-1 victory. They then beat Ottawa on Sept. 20, while the men’s team fell to Ottawa on the same day. Both teams lost to U of T this past weekend on Sept. 27. The team plays its home games at the Kingston Racquet Club.
The Gaels have one more matchup against Guelph on Oct. 3 before they head to the OUA playoffs from Oct. 9-11. The women will look to build on their second-place finish from last year, while the men will try to improve on their third-place finish from last season.
Men’s Ultimate
The Queen’s Men’s Ultimate team secured a spot in the Canadian University Ultimate Championships after winning their fifth straight provincial championship in Brampton on Sept. 19 to Sept. 20.
The Gaels eased past their first two opponents in pool play before losing to Western in a tightly fought affair to end day one. The second day saw the team beat Carleton in the quarterfinals before defeating Waterloo in the semifinals to advance them to the finals against Ottawa. The Gaels came out victorious by a score of 10-8 to claim the Ontario University Ultimate Championship.
Nationals will also take place in Brampton from Oct. 16-18.
