Colin Stewart is running for vice-president (finance and services) (VPFS) in the Society of Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS) by-election.

The nominations were reopened earlier this month after several executive positions received no candidates during the regular election period.

The VPFS role oversees SGPS finances and manages several student services, including the graduate health and dental plan and the student bus program.

Stewart, a member of Queen’s Law class of ’27, said he decided to run after noticing the position had received no candidates during the regular election.

“I recognize how important it is to have our services run thoughtfully and efficiently, and to ensure that our finances are managed well,” he said in a statement to The Journal.

Stewart said his experience working with student clubs and organizations during his undergraduate degree and law school has given him experience managing budgets and organizing programs.

“Two of the most important programs the SPGS runs, the Health and Dental Plan and the bus program, were recently re-negotiated,” he said. “That leaves space for us to explore what more the SGPS can do for students and the community.”

If elected, he said he would focus on ensuring SGPS manages its finances transparently while exploring opportunities to expand services for students.

He also suggested mentorship programs could be an area for future SGPS programming, adding that strong financial management would help ensure both current and future graduate and professional students benefit from SGPS services.

Voting in the SGPS by-election will take place later this month.
