Illnatic

Jacob Paik, ArtSci’14, started his own dance crew ‘Illnatic’ with the hopes of continuing to learn and respect hip hop culture, but more importantly all other styles of dancing.

Paik’s interest in dance began when he was in grade 9, however it wasn’t until his second year at Queen’s that he started dancing seriously.

“As a kid I was always grooving and kicking it, but in grade 12 and first year, I stopped completely and realized just exactly how much I missed it.”

Describing his style as “funky,” Paik can dance to anything by James Brown or Zapp and Roger.

When I asked Paik why he dances, he was quick to answer.

“It’s fun and there’s nothing like it. When you dance alone it’s alright and you have moments, but when you dance with other people you don’t even have to speak a word and you can have a conversation.”

His love for dance continues as he draws inspiration from those around him as well as some of his idols, which includes Bboy Born, Poppin J and Locking Khan.

“These guys focus on fun and charisma; they aren’t limited to one style because they incorporate all styles.”

Paik has a clear vision for where he sees himself in five years’ time.

“I’ll be travelling, trying to learn, trying to gain knowledge from everywhere and become a better dancer and better person”.

Paik currently teaches advance hip hop for Queens Dance Club. You can catch him at the Flow Show and QDC Recital that’s happening in March. He’s also teaching workshops at Waterloo and Laurier to continue to spread the Illnatic brand and Dance Love.
