Queen’s Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) has ended a stretch of interim leadership with the appointment of a permanent dean.

On May 13, students received an email from Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane announcing the appointment of Kevin Kee, ArtSci ’92, as dean of the FAS for a five-year term, effective July 1.

Kee, who also obtained a master’s degree and PhD from Queen’s in 1994 and 1999, returns after a 10-year stretch as the University of Ottawa’s Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He will be a tenured professor in both the Department of History and the School of Computing.

“It is an honour to return to Queen’s as dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science. The university played a formative role in shaping both my career and who I am,” Kee said in a Queen’s Gazette announcement.

This ends the almost two-year period of interim leadership, following former dean Barbara Crow’s departure on August 26, 2024. Bob Lemieux served as interim dean in the immediate aftermath until his resignation on March 26, four months before the end of his term. Bill Nelson stepped in to fill the role for the remaining period.

“As dean at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Kee led strategic planning for the university’s largest faculty by departments and workforce, increasing research funding, expanding lifelong and online learning, and returning the faculty to balanced budgets,” Deane said in his email to students.

Kee brings financial leadership experience through his former deanship as Queen’s continues to address financial issues in the FAS. Projected deficits are expected to rise from $35 million in 2025-26 to $39 million in 2028-29, according to figures presented at the Nov. 19 FAS townhall.
