After 15 years as the executive director of Queen’s University Athletics and Recreation (A&R), the OUA commemorated Leslie Dal Cin’s retirement with the J.P. Loosemore Award.
Awarded to her on May 4, the honour recognizes its recipient for demonstrating exceptional ethics, integrity, and honesty. Specifically, the winner of this award is chosen for their administrative contributions to university sport.
Dal Cin has embodied each of these qualities during both her time at Queen’s as the executive director of A&R, as well as during her time spent at Seneca College and York University as a student athlete playing basketball.
“I have loved every minute of my job at Queen’s […] I love to work, to understand challenges and barriers and then work with colleagues to find creative solutions and put them in place,” Dal Cin said to the OUA.
Dal Cin leaves behind a memorable legacy at Queen’s.
She was the first female A&R executive director in the program’s history. During her time, she advocated for the restoration of Richardson Stadium and fought for improvements to be made to the ARC that benefitted all athletes.
“I have enjoyed a full career with tremendous opportunities and the good fortune to meet and learn from so many different people,” Dal Cin said in an interview with the OUA.
“All that I set out to do at Queen’s was accomplished along with so much more, enjoying every moment and every challenge.”
Dal Cin also rose to the challenge of COVID-19. A&R praised her diligence while she and her team worked to implement safety measures that kept students active and safe.
Ultimately, Dal Cin always held the needs of students and athletes as her top priority.
“Contributing to the betterment of the community, our Queen’s community, is a critical role that our students and student-athletes, coaches and administration play, and this requires personal and leadership development,” she said in an interview with the OUA.
“That’s very important […] When student athletes move on from Queen’s, it’s continuing a career journey having benefited from a superb education and their student-athlete experience.”
