Sports in Brief: Winter reading week

How each Gaels team fared over the break

Varsity Teams

Hockey

The Men’s Hockey team (13-2) extended their three-game winning streak this past weekend, handily defeating the RMC Paladins (1-15) in back-to-back games on Feb. 25 and 26. Now 6-0 against RMC this season, the Gaels head into another back-to-back series against the Paladins this week, facing them at the Memorial Centre on Thursday and then at RMC on Saturday.

The Women’s Hockey team (2-7) returned to the rink with a loss against X University (5-6) on Feb. 25, edged 2-3 by the visiting Rams. Originally slated to play two additional games against Ontario Tech over the weekend, those games were postponed and will be played at a to-be-determined date. This weekend, the Gaels face the York Lions (1-11-1-1) in a double-header on Friday and Saturday.

Basketball

The Women’s Basketball team (7-3) completed a successful campaign in North Bay over the weekend, sweeping the Nipissing Lakers (1-11) twice with the exact same box score on Feb. 25 and 26. This week, they play York University (7-5) on home turf, facing off against the Lions at the ARC’s main gym on Friday and Saturday.

The Men’s Basketball team (8-2) also capped the weekend with a clean sweep in North Bay, routing Nipissing (4-8) in both of their contests on Feb. 25 and 26. This week, they play York in a back-to-back series on Queen’s campus, similarly taking place on Friday and Saturday.

Volleyball

The Men’s Volleyball team (8-1) came off reading break with two emphatic victories over the RMC paladins (4-6), routing them 3-1 in both of their individual contests on Feb. 25 and 27. This week, the Gaels will trade blows with the York Lions (2-7) on Friday and Saturday, marking the last series of the regular season before the start of the OUA playoffs on Mar. 9.

The Women’s Volleyball team (8-2) also swept their penultimate regular season double-headers against RMC (0-10) over the weekend, dousing the paladins 3-0 and 3-1 in their respective matches on Friday and Saturday. They also face York University (7-3) for their final series of the regular season this Friday and Saturday, with both games to be played in the ARC’s main gym.

Varsity Clubs

Women’s Curling

The Women’s Curling team made a deep, but unsuccessful run at the OUA championships over the weekend, winning one of their four matches at the tournament. Their sole victory came against the McMaster Marauders, whom they beat 4-1 on Feb. 25.
