Competing amongst the best of student journalism in the country, The Journal took home two silvers at this year’s John H. MacDonald (JHM) Awards for Excellence in Student Journalism.
The awards are administered yearly by the Canadian University Press, a national group of student newspapers across the country, with results announced during the annual conference, which took place from Feb. 13 to 15. The Journal received shortlists under four categories: Arts & Culture, written student journalist of the year, student publication of the year, and visual of the year.
The Journal placed second in two of the four categories. This year’s Features Editor and last year’s Assistant Arts and Culture Editor, Eva Sheahan, placed second in the Arts and Culture award for her article on Queen’s alum Omar El Akkad, ArtSci ’05, and his book’s perspective on Western indifference to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, titled One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This (2025).
Contributor Kellyann Marie placed second in the visual of the year category for her art piece that accompanied a story about the history and significance of Black hair.
One of this year’s Editors in Chief, last year’s Senior News Editor, and Volume 151’s Assistant News Editor, Meghrig Milkon, placed third in the written student journalist of the year category.
As for the student publication of the year award, no runners-up were provided, as only a winner was announced. The Journal was shortlisted next to The Concordian, Arthur Newspaper, and The Ubyssey, with The Dalhousie Gazette ultimately winning the coveted title.
