‘The Journal’s’ Halloween costume recommendations for 2025

If you’re feeling spooked with picking an outfit, this guide’s got you covered

Niche references and beloved characters will make popular costumes this year.

There’s nothing scarier than being the worst-dressed at a party.

On Halloween, the social stakes are at their highest: showing up in a witty, original costume can guarantee you’ll be the talk of the town until exams. In university, the weekend closest to Oct. 31 often dubbed “Halloweekend,” sometimes demands multiple costumes for different events, adding more options to showcase your creativity.

Whether dressing up with housemates for a cozy night in or strutting your stuff on the town, here are some style recommendations for this spooky season.

Rodrick Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Starting off strong with a costume popping up all over Pinterest, this take on one of Jeff Kinney’s beloved characters is bound to be popular. Given how much the internet loves Wimpy Kid actor Devon Bostick—who’s Canadian, by the way—this costume’s trendy, low-effort, and easily recognizable. Grab a pair of drumsticks, some black eyeliner, and a “Löded Diper” t-shirt, and you’re all set.

Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry

The former Canadian Prime Minister and the pop star were photographed last week kissing on a yacht, prompting rumours that they’re together. True or not, this unlikely duo’s the perfect blend of unsettling and trendy for Halloween. Grab a brown toupee and a sparkly microphone, and you and your companion will be a hilarious hit.

Clark Kent or Superman from Superman

James Gunn’s Superman was the blockbuster of the summer, so the caped crusader will be a hot costume this fall. An easy iteration of this costume may involve things you already have in your closet—throw on a white button-up shirt, a necktie, and some glasses, all accompanying a t-shirt with the iconic logo, and you’re Clark Kent mid-transformation into Superman.

Snoopy from the Peanuts comics

Charlie Brown’s charismatic canine companion makes the perfect Halloween costume for his variety. Classic Snoopy costumes could involve dog ears and a white t-shirt. More advanced takes might tackle his “Joe Cool” persona with black sunglasses and a red sweater, or his “Flying Ace” character with a scarf and pilot’s hat. For a fun group costume, dress as different versions!

Coldplay concert CEO and HR scandal

This costume’s for the chronically online partygoers. It’s more niche but will be a knockout with the right crowd. This summer, Coldplay singer Chris Martin accidentally exposed an affair between former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and Head of HR Kristin Cabot via the kiss cam at a Boston show. The internet went wild, mocking the couple for their boldness and awkward response. To pull off this duo costume, all you need is a black tank top, silver hair, and a lot of audacity.

No matter the costume, Halloween’s an excellent chance to showcase pop culture knowledge and comedic commitment. With only one week left until Halloweekend kicks off, it’s time to pull together an epic ensemble.
