The UDSI will be in effect from Oct. 17 to Nov. 2.

With students in the midst of back-to-back-to-back party weekends, fine enforcement is ramping up.

The University Safety District Initiative (UDSI), is a program hosted by Kingston Police, the City of Kingston, and the University to address high levels of partying during certain times of the year, such as Homecoming and St. Patrick’s Day. When in effect, hosting street parties or violating other bylaws can result in Queen’s taking action under the student code of conduct or lead to the issuing of an Administrative Monetary Penalty (AMP). The UDSI went into effect on Oct. 17 at 9 p.m. and will remain in effect until Nov. 2 at 6 a.m.

Its three-week span coincides with the traditional party weekends of Homecoming, Fauxcoming— short for “fake homecoming”, held the week after Homecoming, which has been scheduled during reading week for the past two years—and Halloween.

“During this time, community partners, including City Enforcement Staff and Kingston Police, will have an increased presence in the University District. Bylaw officers can also issue AMPs for Nuisance Party and Noise Bylaw infractions,” the University wrote in an announcement made on the Off-Campus Living Advisor (OCLA) webpage.

As part of the UDSI, Gord Edgar Downie Pier and Breakwater Beach will also be closed to the public nightly, starting at 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Oct. 17 to Oct. 19, Oct. 24 to Oct. 26 and Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.

The AMS will be hosting a harm reduction booth in the Queen’s Centre on Oct. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to give out free supplies and safety information for FOCO. Additionally, the AMS will be handing out free burgers outside Ontario Hall on Oct. 25.

Of the AMP’s, fines can range from $100 to $200 for noise bylaw offences, to $2,000 for hosting a nuisance party.
