QJAdvice: T.W.

Hi QJAdvice: My ex started Facebook messaging me after not talking to me for the past 1.5 years. They asked me how I was doing and I replied to be polite. I’m not sure what this means. What should I do? T.W.

Hi T.W.,

Talking to an ex can be a confusing experience, but not necessarily a bad one. A lot can happen in 1.5 years, and the possibility that your ex has matured is quite likely. After not talking for so long, things may have seemed awkward, but casually talking like friends can break the awkwardness. Maybe it took 1.5 years, but it seems like your ex wants to be on good terms with you.

Because you guys have had a romantic connection before, so make a conscious effort to make sure you guys don’t get too flirty and neither of you interpret this reconnection as an opportunity to get back together or hook up. It’s great that your ex has messaged you, and you know that you guys can casually talk without pressure or any post break-up anger or feelings.

Make sure you know what you want (or don’t want) to happen from talking again and your relationship will be fine! It could be great to have your ex back in your life, or at least know that you two are finally on good, speaking terms!
