When I think of comfort food, grilled cheese and Kraft Dinner come to mind. So when I came across a sampling of MLT DWN’s mac and cheese grilled cheese during the sidewalk sale in Frosh Week, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. That little taste of heaven was on my mind for the following few days, and I found myself raving about it to anyone who would listen. Nostalgic of my Frosh Week experience, I had to try it out when I walked past the Princess St. restaurant the other day.

Last week QJBlogs covered Departures to help cure your travel bug. Today, we’re bringing you another must-see series that documents travelling experiences, this time with a focus on food. A lot of cultural traditions are surrounded by food, and you can find out a lot about them by observing how people eat.

I am a sucker for cosmetics; it’s a blessing that Kingston lacks a Sephora, or else my school budget would likely go out the window. Since grade eight I’ve experimented with makeup products, and as of late I have managed to develop the perfect makeup routine that is both efficient and effortless. The biggest discovery I’ve made through years of product testing is that less is more. Here are my tried and true products, all of which can be purchased at Shopper’s Drug Mart, Sephora and/or The Body Shop.

Beneath your skin lies raw, unsheathed art.

If you’ve walked through the Queen’s Centre or or Mac-Corry lately, you’ve probably noticed advertisements for a product called “NuvaRing”. While the ads certainly grab your attention, a glowing halo over a young woman’s head doesn’t tell you much exactly about what they want you to talk to your doctor about. So, what the heck is NuvaRing?

No one enjoys being sick, but falling ill in a foreign country can be particularly unpleasant. It may be difficult to get certain medicine or communicate with local health workers — situations which cause all sorts of irrational fear. Last week I came down with something and it motivated me to write a short list of tips for any other students thinking about travelling overseas:

Stepping into Cookes delicatessen takes you back to 1865, the year it opened. You’re immediately reminded of a scene from Willy Wonka or Harry Potter as you step into the warm and cozy atmosphere, complete with old wood floors that squeak under your feet and dark wood paneling that houses overflowing shelves of gourmet products.

Johnny Yoo touched his first set of turntables when he was in his first year at Queen’s in 2008. The economics student had a strong background in music (he played piano, drums and string bass in high school), and was able to pick it up immediately. Unlike most beginner DJs, he started with CDs.
“I started out with just my ears, no computer at all which no one really does anymore, which is something I’m pretty proud of.”

There’s nothing more entertaining than a bunch of melodramatic women fighting over one playboy bachelor.
Thankfully, the TV franchise The Bachelor has brought the fun to Canada for the first time, bringing us our very own alumni: Brad Smith.
So far, the ex-Gael has proved to be great at getting girls into bed and making bad wife decisions.

November is one of those ‘in-between’ months where things turn a little grey; it’s too early to get in the holiday spirit, fall weather has come and gone and exams are looming and approaching quickly. You might find yourself feeling a little stifled here in Kingston, perhaps googling beach destinations or looking for cheap flights.
